Dental Dams

Dental Dam How To:

Oral sex may be a lot of fun, but it can also spread various sexually transmitted diseases. To make oral-vaginal sex (cunnilingus) and oral-anal sex (rimming) safer, you can use a barrier such as a dental dam. Unfortunately, dental dams can be hard to find, and they also may be somewhat expensive. There is, however, a way around this problem. Using a condom and scissors, you can make a dental dam all by yourself! 

1.      Unroll the condom.

2.      Cut off the tip.

3.      Cut down one side of the condom with the scissors.

4.      You now have a latex rectangle perfect for use during oral sex!

Tips:

1.      It's a good idea to buy un-lubricated condoms for use during oral sex. Nonoxynol-9 makes your tongue numb, and many other lubricants simply taste bad.

2.      Some condom companies make flavored condoms and lubricants specifically for use during oral sex. If you hate the taste of latex, you may want to try some of the different brands.

3.      Saran wrap and other plastic wraps can also be used as barriers for oral sex, but there is little to no research about their effectiveness - which means they might not be effective at all. The main advantages are cost and the ability to tear off a piece that is as large as you need.

4.      Put a little lubricant on the side of the dental dam touching skin. It keeps the latex from sticking, and makes the sensations more enjoyable.

5.      You can also make a dental dam using a latex glove. There are two ways to do it! The first is to cut off the three middle fingers... which gives you a square with two handles where you can insert your thumbs to make the dental dam easier to manipulate. The second is to cut off all the fingers, except for the thumb, and then slit the glove down the pinky side. That gives you a square with a lovely place in the middle (i.e. the thumb) you can use to safely insert your tongue, or a finger, into the receiving partner.

Common Sex Toy Materials

Sex toys can be made from many different types of materials. When it comes to purchasing a product that is going to be intimate with your body, do your research and don't hesitate to ask questions. Here is a list of some of the most common sex toy materials.

Phthalates are a type of plasticizer (used to soften plastics). It is suspected that phthalates may cause some health problems. We are proud to offer a number of phthalate-free products and our staff would be happy to help you identify them.

Silicone is phthalate-free and hypoallergenic. It transmits vibrations effectively and is nonporous, which means that silicone sex toys can be cleaned more thoroughly than other toys. Silicone also warms up quickly and retains body heat. Since silicone toys are capable of withstanding high temperatures, you may sterilize non-vibrating toys in boiling water for 2-3 minutes.

Glass is nonporous, hypoallergenic, and phthalate-free. Since glass is nonporous, like silicone, you can completely sanitize your toy. Certain higher-grades of glass, such as Pyrex, can be fully sterilized by boiling. Lubrication tends to last longer with glass products.

CyberSkin is phthalate-free, but porous, so it can be more difficult to clean. CyberSkin Renew should be used to keep your toy soft, and it should be store in a cool dry place. It is unclear whether or not CyberSkin contains latex (the manufacturer does not share all ingredients), so if you are allergic to latex this product may not be for you.

TPR (thermoplastic rubber) and TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) material are virtually interchangeable. Both are considered Thermoplastic Elastomers, a material that is often phthalate-free. It is a porous material, however; so be sure to clean the toy to the best of your ability with anti-bacterial soap or cleaning solution. TPR is a flexible, elastic material that enhances penetrative stimulation. High tension strength and tear-resistant, TPR material does last longer than most materials like it. This material should be safe for those with latex allergies.
